Koi herpes virus

West Nile virus

Cochlosoma anatis

cochlosoma anatis

CAHFS thin section electron micrographic image of gill tissue from index case that led UC Davis fish pathologists to a herpes virus as the suspect agent responsible for a fatal case of gill necrosis in a show Koi. Nucleus of leukocyte in blood vessel in the center of this image contains intranuclear particles consistent in size and shape with herpes virus. Koi herpes virus has spread widely in recent years inflicting severe economic loses in the cyprinid fish industries worldwide that provide fish for the dinner table.
A negative stain electron micrograph of West Nile virus isolated, grown, and amplified in cell culture from psittacine tissues by avian virologists from CAHFS Fresno. This virus is around 45nm in diameter.
A scanning electron micrograph of a turkey intestinal protozoan discovered by CAHFS Turlock faculty that re-emerged in California flocks in 1992. This parasite attaches to the surface of intestinal enterocytes and impairs absorption of nutrients resulting in slow growth.

Exotic Newcastle Disease virus

exotic newcastle disease virus

Thin section electron micrograph of attaching/effacing E.coli from turkey intestine showing severe disruption of the enterocyte surface. This enteropathogenic bacterium produces diarrhea in many species of animal including humans.
Thin section electron micrographic image of the bovine protozoa Neospora caninum that was discovered and described by a team effort involving CAHFS San Bernardino, Tulare and Davis faculty and staff. This protozoal agent is associated with bovine abortion which creates significant economic loses for dairymen worldwide.
Negative stain electron micrograph of paramyxo virus from one of the index cases of the recent avian Exotic Newcastle Disease outbreak in Southern California . This agent caused severe economic loses to the layer industry in California . Faculty and staff from all CAHFS labs, volunteers from other diagnostic labs throughout the country and USDA staff assisted in the CAHFS laboratory effort. CAHFS San Bernardino was the epicenter for the CAHFS lab work.
